I am here to talk about telecommunications. Incase this is a little vague, let me quote Wikipedia:

Telecommunication is the transmission of signs, signals, messages, words, writings, images and sounds or information of any nature by wire, radio, optical or other electromagnetic systems. Telecommunication occurs when the exchange of information between communication participants includes the use of technology.

Despite the fancy term, this is important stuff that affects all of us. We are so used to new technology that we take it for granted. But it is a vital part of global operations, so this blog is here to tell you why the world runs on silent signals of electromagnetic waves. Think of what life would be like without the telephone network, computer networks and internet and the radio broadcasting system. It would be a dull place indeed.

Much of what we know comes across through various media. We would be lost if we had to just read the newspaper. In fact, most don’t exist anymore. We get information about political crises, the economy and the environment, not to mention the vast majority of our amusement and entertainment.

People who prefer to live off the grid like to point out the abuse of telecommunications and how often we see and hear things that are inappropriate and offensive. I might not disagree…   I do know that I have often been exposed to things that makes me feel that the entire system has gone down the toilet. It doesn’t have to be a politician insulting immigrants or certain religions. It doesn’t have to be an anarchist spewing venom. It doesn’t have to be a celebrity scandal or a horrible crime that keeps you up at night.

It is often a simple comedian telling dirty jokes or and using potty humor. I think with certain subjects there is a time and place. I don’t care if you go to a Las Vegas show or read a book on the subject. Just keep it off the airwaves. There are rules and codes regarding public profanity but many times it slips through. Just think of cable TV where anything goes. We already have to put up with watching people pee on screen and now we have to have tainted humor that should be confined to a private place.

Thus, there is good and bad involved in technology. It is behind the advancement of the planet but is also the bane of our existence.
